In Short – Covering 212 acres, Grundy Forest comprises part of the South Cumberland Recreation Area, a conglomerate of eight tightly grouped parks about 100 miles southeast of Nashville. Fiery Gizzard Creek cuts through the center of the park and lies at the bottom of Gizzard Cove, a steep-walled gorge dominating most of the area. Walls of rock reach skyward 300 feet on either side. Visitors should expect slow, tough hiking due to the trail's terrain.

Know Before You Go:
Though it's officially known as Grundy Forest State Natural Area, most people know it as Fiery Gizzard because of a Davey Crockett legend. After cooking a turkey while camping along one of the rivers, Crockett popped the hot gizzard in his mouth, thoroughly burning his tongue.
