The Railway
The mile-long track that travels up and down Lookout Mountain is both a national historic site and a mechanical engineering landmark. While the history of the railway with the
72.7 percent grade might be interesting, today's passengers have only a view of run-down homes and ratty trees during the 30-minute round-trip journey. "The switch," where two cars briefly share the same tracks halfway up the mountain, marks the journey's high point. For the best vantage point of Lookout Mountain--and the obligatory gift shop--get off at the free observation deck, which gives you a 100-mile view.
The Area
There's plenty to do in Chattanooga, so don't waste your time and money here. Better to head to nearby Rock City, Lookout Mountain's main attraction, and the truly impressive Tennessee Aquarium. Tours of Ruby Falls and the Battles for Chattanooga Museum are also entertaining.…
